Rae Reynolds

Rae Reynolds

Rae Reynolds is a visual artist based in the New Forest in England working primarily with textiles. Her practice is rooted in place and landscape, building layered surfaces through print, painting and stitch that are tactile, considered and quietly complex.

Making, for Rae, is inseparable from looking and walking. The coastlines, shifting light and layered histories of the landscape around her are a constant presence in the studio. She gathers, observes and responds, allowing the slow accumulation of experience to find its way into cloth.

Her work is shaped by a lifelong engagement with colour as feeling and form as meaning, influenced by the spiritual dimension of art from medieval devotional objects to the writing of Wassily Kandinsky. There is an inherent tension in her practice between freedom and constraint, the expressive looseness of paint and print against the slow commitment of stitch, and it is within that tension that the work finds its life.
